Classic dildo: guide to materials, types, and use

What is the classic dildo?

The classic dildo is the ancestor of all penetration toys: no vibrator, no battery, no motor. It is a non-vibrating dildo — pure shape and material, chosen for its physical characteristics: size, consistency, weight. An ideal starting point for those approaching a penetrating toy for the first time, it is also the constant reference for those who want essential and completely controlled stimulation. Versatile for vaginal, anal, and external clitoral stimulation, the classic dildo remains the most adaptable sex toy — independent of power or battery, immediate to use, easy to clean. The ideal beginner dildo has exactly these characteristics: simple shape, manageable size, safe material.

Brief history of the dildo

From the Paleolithic to ancient Egypt, from the Romans to the Greeks, through the millennia-old Eastern civilizations and the knights of the late Middle Ages, the dildo in its classic variant has always existed. According to some testimonies, French soldiers before going to war would leave classic dildos for their wives. If in the 6th century BC they were made of stone or wax, starting from the Renaissance leather and then glass took over, both to be filled with cotton, rags, or hot water. The first dildo made of rubber dates back to the 1940s, followed by PVC and the currently popular silicone.

Types of classic dildo

Small as a finger, medium as a standard penis, or large as an extra-large size: the silicone classic dildo is the most common format, but it also exists in rubber or metal, straight, curved, smooth, or rough. An evergreen available in always different versions. For those looking for premium materials, Laid produces the Dildo D.1 with a sinuous and essential design; Njoy offers the Eleven in stainless steel — a rigid material that also allows for temperature play, hot and cold.

How to choose the classic dildo?

The classic dildo is the simplest starting point in the dildo category: no motor, no battery, no additional functions — the choice depends only on three variables. The first is the diameter: for beginners, between 2.5 and 3 cm is the most manageable range. The second is the length: 12-15 cm allows for easy control of depth without having to think every time. The third is the material: medical silicone for those who want safety and hygiene without compromise, stainless steel for those looking for rigidity and weight, rubber or ABS for a lower entry price.

Shape matters as much as size: a classic dildo that is straight is more versatile and suitable for deep penetration, while a curved one stimulates the G-spot more precisely with pressure movements on the front wall. For anal use, a wide base or suction cup is a safety requirement, not optional.

How to use the classic dildo?

The essential shape of the classic dildo makes it the most versatile toy: suitable for all types of penetration and all types of couples. Before vaginal or anal insertion, apply plenty of water-based lubricant — essential for increasing comfort and reducing friction. Start with the first 3-4 centimeters, corresponding to the most sensitive area of the vaginal or anal canal, gradually increasing the depth. Alternatively, the classic dildo can be used externally as a clitoral stimulator or for external anal stimulation.

Classic dildo: safety of use

Two fundamental rules for using the classic dildo safely. First: the toy must have a wide base or a suction cup if used for anal penetration — without a safe base, the toy can be completely absorbed and require medical intervention. Second: never alternate the same toy between different uses without a complete wash in between — rectal bacteria must not come into contact with vaginal mucous membranes.

Cleaning and maintenance of the classic dildo

Cleaning the classic dildo varies based on the material: medical silicone, rubber, metal — each requires a different approach to ensure hygiene and longevity.

How to clean the classic dildo based on the material?

The classic dildo should be cleaned before and after each use with warm water and mild soap or with a specific toy cleaner spray. It is important not to alternate the same toy between anal and vaginal use: the rectum contains bacteria that can cause infections when in contact with vaginal mucous membranes. Those who want to use it for both should maintain two separate toys. Medical silicone models can be sterilized in boiling water; those made of rubber or PVC should only be cleaned on the surface and replaced more frequently.
